Thomas Hamm
Design Manager and Cohort Supervisor
Thomas Hamm is a member of the GutMonkey team, where he supervises and supports the organization’s facilitators while designing creative, experience-driven curriculum for programs. He has been part of GutMonkey since 2019 and has worked in outdoor and adventure education for companies like Outward Bound Schools and Higher Education Universities since 2011, bringing both hands-on field experience and a Master’s degree in Education to his work.
Thomas especially enjoys helping staff solve challenges creatively and building programs that blend fun, adventure, and meaningful personal growth for people living with rare chronic health conditions.
When he’s not working on programs, you’ll likely find him bikepacking—camping and covering long distances on two wheels, just for the joy of the journey.
Q. Camp name?
Crystal Dolphin (CD for short)
Q. What would you do on a YES day?
I would start my day by riding my bike to an amazing coffee shop, go hunt for cool records, snack constantly throughout the day, play some soccer with my friends, and wrap up the day by sitting on my front porch rocking chairs with my fam before falling asleep to some terrible cult classic movie!
Q. What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done?
Biked the Oregon coast at the end of November. So much rain, very dark, but incredible views and scary but remarkable memories.
Q. What did you study in school?
I got my bachelor’s degree in business administration and my masters degree in education.
Q. Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
It might not count as advice, but one of my best friends who I’ve done several bike trips with has a saying that I like to live by when I’m biking, working, or doing anything challenging in life. Her mantra is “no hurries, no worries.” I like to think that it both encapsulates the need to slow down, to be thoughtful, and to not sweat the small stuff. We often have more time than we think if we just afford ourselves that time.
Q. Guilty pleasure movie or show?
I’ve seen the movie The Lost Boys more times than I can count. It’s probably more than 25 times by now.
Q. Current favorite thing ever?
My worm hotel that I installed in my vegetable garden. Feeding my worms food scraps brings me so much joy.
